I care for Howard Hawks’ films…Bringing Up Baby, His Girl Friday, Red River, and Rio Bravo are incredible pieces of entertainment. As I was watching Australia, the fresh Baz Luhrmann movie with Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman, I kept thinking…man, Baz must really savor Hawks’ movies, too.

As evidenced by the films above, the mismatched couple who fight and fight until they realize they’re perfect for each other (gape Distinguished Ado About Nothing, Taming of the Shrew, and Moonlighting as other examples of the design) and the group of underestimated misfits who advance together to fight depraved are two colossal elements outmoded again and again by Hawks. Throw in a bit of John Ford’s The Searchers and its hard study at racism leading to inhuman deeds and mix well and you have…Australia.

The predicament original audiences may have with Luhrmann’s modern movie is it’s very, very earnest. This is straight ahead sage storytelling with its heart on its sleeve and hat and boots with never a wink to the crowd in the theater to say “ain’t these people quaint”. You either select in or you don’t. If you do, like I did, you’re in for a hell of a coast.

This, I feel, is the flip-side to The Dusky Knight. Proper and cross are trapped in something akin to a battle and an embrace in Nolan’s Gotham City. You root for Batman, but he does stuff that is on the horrible side of freedom and civil rights. The Joker is pure crazy, but he’s the most mesmerizing character in the film. In Australia, there are sterling guys and abominable guys and you are either really first-rate or twirl your mustache rotten. The main villain actually may be a bit too two-dimensional in that aspect, but it didn’t harm my overall enjoyment.

Why? Well, fable melodrama is hard to pull off…I’m talking about the actual stuff here. The new BBC production of Bleak House is a tall example. There are very friendly and very, very abominable people in that fable, but the acting is so incredible you rarely if ever gain yourself rolling your eyes (like whenever I’ve watched Smallville…see: dreadful anecdote melodrama) . Kidman and Jackman sell their characters…the displaced Englishwoman and the rough-hewn “Drover”. They are thrown together fair to, initially it seems, thwart a execrable cattle baron from monopolizing the beef industry in the country. But the other expansive memoir, the main one in fact, centers around Australia’s “lost generation”. These were Aboriginal children who were fathered by white men who didn’t claim them. They were taken by the government, the mothers had no rights, and handed over to the church to be taught to “act white” and then work in the servant class. Nullah, played by the astonishing child actor Brandon Walters, is one of these “creamies” who has been hidden on the ranch now owned by Lady Sarah Ashley (Kidman) . Lady Ashley discovers what is going on, is vexed by the law, and works to sustain him hidden as well. Why the Drover cares so worthy about Nullah becomes certain later in the film (no, it’s not what you consider…that would be too easy) and Jackman’s experience with stage and musical work does him proud here. He can do earnest better than almost any actor alive when he needs to and his later spend of the f-word (the only curse I can remember from the entire film) hits so hard, in unprejudiced the legal emotional moment, that it kills. Russell Crowe was originally cast as the Drover but backed out. If Crowe had done the film, and I have liked him in other things…the Napoleon-era British navy film that I can’t remember the name of honest now, it would not have worked. Crowe never loses that bit of edge and the Drover, at one point, really has to fully rupture down and become completely vulnerable. Jackman shines at that point.

Anyway…a warning, the movie is long 2 hours and 40something minutes, but I didn’t realize that until I had left the theater. I saw it alone…I was out of town at a pediatrics meeting…and that’s a great thing. I didn’t have to veil from Holly the few times the movie hit me a bit too hard and do that cough-throat clearing thing we dudes do to conceal up a stray race.

I was looking forward to seeing this movie when it was release behind last year given all the hype, and was not dissappointed!

Director, Baz Luhman, has served up a slab of nostalgia ala Australian style with all those gorgeous elements we treasure from films of the 40’s and 50’s, breathtaking, sweeping landscapes, beautiful costumes and two exquisite actors in Kidman and Jackman who find the essence of the film. It nostalgia in every sense of the word, in every frame. The acting style reminds us of Bogart, Grant, Bacall and Dunne. The anecdote is narrative in every intention and impartial ravishing. I loved the salute to “The Wizard of Oz”a really nice touch!

Of course we all know how it’s going to ruin. Watching Australia was like eating a box of Quality Street chocolates. Obvious I know what I’m getting, but I unruffled worship it.

For those of you who want to exhaust a few hours (and I mean a few; it’s almost 3 hours) being completely entertained then thisis the movie for you. I only wished they had inserted an interval on it’s theatrical release and made the whole event at the movies a staunch nostalgic experience.

I can’t imagine why anyone wouldn’t like this movie, unless you impartial aren’t up for a feel fine represent. I want to peer more movies being made like this!!!! Well done to all!!!

Finally, we rep to have the fifth and final season of That Girl! It has been a wait that is well worth waiting for! Ann finally becomes engaged to her 4 year boyfriend, magazine executive Donald Hollinger. This season features a few episodes that focus on unprejudiced how serious planning to procure married is for Ann and Donald.

There are spacious guest stars in this last season that include the broad Phil Silvers playing Ann’s Uncle and Cloris Leachman playing Don’s sister. For the second time, Ann’s genuine life father, Danny Thomas appears in her expose, and this time he does more than unprejudiced a walk-on. Ann and her father Danny stop this episode with a musical stage number! This last season closes with highlights of all 5 years of That Girl, while Ann and Don remember their well-liked moments together, when they are trapped in an elevator. It’s a fitting ending for such a fantastic series!

In 170 minutes, this NBC-produced miniseries hoped to capture a decade–and in many ways, it did. The ’70s traces the lives of four friends from their senior year at Kent State (marked by the killing of four student protestors by the National Guard) through the era of Watergate and Tang. At its worst, it’s a so-so soap opera held together by fascinating bits of historical trivia, giving equal time to the issus of the era (the Equal Rights Amendment, the oil crisis) and inescapable bits of pop culture (Mary Tyler Moore and the hustle). The characters are pretty obviously engineered to plumb every angle of the decade’s cultural topography: the young black National Guardmember who deserts to Los Angeles in time to join the Black Panthers and open a cinema featuring hits like Shaft and Cleopatra Jones, the sorority girl turned disco qUn turned California cultist, the young intellectual woman who finds feminism and abandons marriage in favor of a career, and the conservative law student turned Watergate burglar turned pipeline worker turned environmentalist. The acting’s not bad and the story hangs together, but the show is really at its best when the soundtrack takes over, allowing montages of memorable photos and archival film clips to reveal (and revel in) the real history behind the melodrama. –Grant Balfour

Almost every film–from his Czech debut Loves of a Blonde to Man on the Moon–is given fair screen time in a broad survey. This overview is further enhanced by delightful interview clips with Forman, whose boyish charm is infectiously upbeat (and admirable, considering he lost his parents to the Nazi concentration camps). As one of the few filmmakers in the series who isn’t American by birth, Forman also has a different perspective on America and his success in the Hollywood system, beginning with 1975’s One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest. That Oscar winner established many of the themes that dominate Forman’s work, and his lively anecdotes compensate for star Jack Nicholson’s absence as an interviewee. Equally memorable is Forman’s recollection of working with James Cagney on Ragtime (the great actor’s final feature film), and receiving a cherished memento while visiting Cagney’s home. Among the program’s other interviewees, Amadeus Oscar-winner F. Murray Abraham recalls Forman’s direction to play the composer Salieri as Abraham had previously played Cyrano and Iago–an equal blend of “romance and manipulation.” That kind of simple, eloqunt guidance is a trademark for Forman, who humorously notes that “I knew I’d made it” when his name appeared as an answer in the New York Times crossword puzzle. –Jeff Shannon
